1838 Wallcoverings: Rosemore & Avington

1838 Wallcoverings specialise in producing high end collections that are produced by the beautiful craft of Surface Printing.

This technique was created in 1838 by Charles Potter, his brother Harold, and Walmsley Preston - a foreman machine printer, who had a mind that was ingeniously mechanical. It was a development from the principles of calico printing, which used engraved copper rollers, each furnished with its appropriate colour and positioned in a rotary machine that enabled a complete pattern to be printed with one passage of the cloth.

This process was established in Darwen at the foothills of the Pennines in Lancashire where the damp, humid conditions were ideal for calico printing.

The craft of Surface printing creates a beautiful hand painted affect using chalky, opaque inks. This craft has changed little over time and the current 1838 collections have been printed on Surface machines that date back over 100 years.

The collections have all been printed on a Non Woven base that is classed as ‘Paste the Wall’ and Strippable,’ allowing for easy hanging and stripping. Furthermore, the inks are Acrylic and are classed as waterbased, non-toxic and very low in VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds).
