So, what inspired you to become an interior designer?
My mother has been in the industry for over 30 years and when I moved back to New Zealand, I brought the concept of home staging with me after having spent 10 years photographing houses in Melbourne.
How long have you been living in New Zealand for now?
For the past 7 1/2 years I have worked as an interior designer in the Hawkes Bay where I am able to marry my photography, design and home staging together under Smoke N Mirrors
As a designer, do you have a signature style?
I love contemporary classic – referencing luxe but with an approachable feel.
Is it important that your style matches your clients?
I do love it when my style is able to match others – however it’s not about me – it’s their house! I’m looking to work cohesively with my clients to complement and enhance their home through colour, weave or pattern.
What are some design trends you are picking up on at the moment?
Wallpaper! In particular panel wallpapers I have a great one in my bedroom.

Do you have a favourite design project that you’ve completed, either in New Zealand or abroad?
I have just completed work on what is going to be an amazing B&B in St Albans, Christchurch.
I loved going through the design process and then seeing the finished result as there are some beautiful pieces and fabric that feature in this space. The client had a very broad brief of ‘Black and White’ and entrusted me with the creative freedom to respond and allow the house to still feel like a home.

What’s something that you would want future clients to know?
I think there is a misconception around designers being too costly. Yes you pay for the experience and knowledge but as designers we also have accessibility to a variety of cost-effective fabrics, wallpapers, designer furniture and accessories. I think it is important to be adaptable to all budgets.
Communication is key.
